NDIA CFC Orlando Holds First RDA Defense Forum

The Central Florida Chapter National Defense Industry Association held its first Defense Forum with it’s theme being “Evolving Research, Development and Acquisition Strategies in the Global War on Terror. Chapter VP Programs and Strategic Initiatives Fred Eisele and DPEO STRI COL Kevin Dietrick assembled a panel of experts that addressed the dramatic and far reaching changes being made to the manner DOD is accomplishing its Research, Development and Acquisition responsibilities. It was noted that while R&D efforts still need to look towards Future Force Requirements such as the Future Combat System (FCS) it is essential to address battlefield advantages and life saving technologies that are needed on the battlefield now and are being developed for the Global War on Terror. Similarly acquisition policies and practices are undergoing dramatic and significant changes to insure that these developments can be tested, training developed and fielded in a revolutionary manner. MG (P) Jeff Sorenson (USA) the Deputy for Acquisition and Systems Management ASA-ALT, who has been nominated by President George Bush to be the Army’s G6/Chief Information Officer, served as the Keynote Speaker. On the Panel which COL Dietrick served as the moderator were Dr. Robert Buhrhuhl (SES) Director Joint Acquisition Cell OSD, BG John Bartley (USA) PEO CSCSS, Mr. Gary Martin (SES) Director CERDEC, Ft Monmouth NJ, CAPT Steve Burris, (USN) CO, NAWCTSD CO, NSA Orlando and Ms. Leah Treppel, Deputy Operations Special Operations and Acquisition and Logistics, SOCOM. Issues that were discussed included: Sustainment of items procured under Rapid Acquisition, utilizing industry up front testing, refocused industry IR&D, approved budget and priority of new requirements out of sync, "death by a 1000 good ideas, need for system perspective, jointness is real, JNN as an example was a material sucess but training failure Proceeds from the event will go towards programs to support Injured service personnel.
